Bullying Statistics: How Bullying in School Affects Children and Adolescents

Bullying statistics show that bullying in the United States has increased considerably in the past few years. According to bullying statistics, the incidence of bullying has reached more than 29 per cent among the youth. This means that over 5.7 million children all over the country are currently involved in the bullying process – either as the one who is being bullied or as the bully. In most cases, bullying happens in schools and in playgrounds where children have the chance to closely interact with one another.

In most cases, the effects of verbal attacks are just as bad as the physical ones; the embarrassment and the humiliation cause the child who is being bullied to withdraw and stay as far away as possible from his peers.

What Caused the Rise in Bullying?

Some of the factors include lack of parental guidance, peer pressure, drugs, and violence in the media and overall deterioration in family values. Studies showed that children coming from families with absentee parents are more likely to become bullies that those children who have very strong family ties. Excellent communication between parents and children can help reduce bullying.

Other information gleaned from bullying statistics include the fact that experts believe that children coming from troubled homes often harbor a lot of resentment towards their parents that they tend to show their resentment by picking on the kids at school or at the playground. In most cases, these bullies would pick on the kids whom they either envy or those that are simply too helpless to fight back.
